Hamburg
The little town of Hamburg lies on the estuary of the Keiskammer River, in the Eastern Cape which here forms a lagoon. As the town's name suggests, it was founded in 1857 by German settlers who set out to establish a port at the mouth of the river. The project was frustrated by the silting-up of the harbour, but thanks to its beautiful beach Hamburg has developed into a popular family holiday resort.
Hamburg is popular for its great fishing, remember that you require a fishing permit. Hiking, canoeing, windsurfing, bird watching, heritage trails are a few of the activities that you could engage in. Every man and his boat seem to have worked the waters of the Keiskamma River and the local seaboard at some time or another. 'Monster kob!' vies with 'killer steenbras!' in the various enthusiastic blogs from anglers who regularly don't let the big ones get away.
A worthwhile visit is to the Keiskamma Art Project. The Keiskamma Art Project is a community initiative providing women with the skills, materials and training for the production of art and craftwork; a forum in which to generate income; and, support in establishing their own small enterprises. In 2004 the Keiskamma Art project completed its first notable artwork, the Keiskamma Tapestry, which was first exhibited in the National Arts Festival 2004.
This large embroidery measures 120 meters in length and is 0, 5 meters wide. The Keiskamma Tapestry is a visual portrayal of the history of the Eastern Cape focusing on the Xhosa people. The Keiskamma Tapestry is the first of a number of large-scale works made by the Keiskamma Art project.
