Bushmans River Mouth
Geography and History
The beautiful holiday resort of Bushman's River Mouth is situated on the Sunshine Coast, along the Eastern coast of South Africa, approximately 125km East of Port Elizabeth and 175km West of East London. It is located on the Western bank and at the mouth of the Bushmans River. Other nearby towns include Alexandria (25km), Port Alfred (30km) and Grahamstown (58km) and the holiday resort of Kenton-on-Sea, situated directly across the river from Bushmans River Mouth.
Bushman's River Mouth was established in 1897 when farmers from nearby rural towns such as Paterson, Cookhouse, Somerset East and Cradock, in the interior, were granted permission by the Department of Forestry, who owned the land, to camp along the banks of the river during the Christmas holiday season. The farmers would trek to this remote area in numbers, with their ox wagons fully laden with food, livestock and water, all congregating at the mouth of the Bushmans River.
